The Challenge: Long-term Preservation. Strategies and Practice of European Partnerships

The conference entitled “The Challenge: Longterm Preservation” aims to present and discuss the current technical and organisational status of measures being taken for the long-term preservation of digital media in various countries in Europe. The goal here is jointly to identify different methods and strategies and to sound out the feasibility of a European alliance of the individual national alliances devoted to preventing digital data loss.

Science Archives in the 21st Century

Today science data archives face increasing challenges to meet the needs of their users. They have also become highly distributed. NSSDC will sponsor a workshop to improve communication among the practitioners supporting science data centers, archives, and repositories. A first workshop, scheduled for 25-26 April 2007, will be held at the University of Maryland University College, Inn and Conference Center, with a specific focus on facilitating communication and eliciting best practices and outstanding challenges from practicing science data managers, with an emphasis on good stewardship of NASA's Heliophysics, Planetary, Astrophysics, and Earth science data as well as perspectives from other science archives in the US and internationally. DCC Tutorial Building Trust in Digital Repositories

Running from 11.00am to 4.00pm, this practical tutorial will provide a contextual overview of the need for an evidence based evaluation of digital repositories and offer an overview of the DCC pilot audits to date. The tutorial will then move on to demonstrate how institutions can make use of the DRAMBORA toolkit to design, develop, evaluate, and/or refine new or existing trusted digital repository systems and workflows. This will involve a walk-through of the criteria checklist with practical examples based on the pilot audits. Participants will be encouraged to draw upon and share their own experiences during this discussion.
