PACKED vzw

PACKED, platform for the archiving and preservation of artistic creations on electronic and digital bearers It is an inherent quality of new media that technological innovations happen in quick succession. The same holds for the material and the methodology of preservation. Various institutions in Flanders manage enormous amounts of material: art works, as well as documentaries on art, on electronic and digital bearers. Over the past years these institutions have also taken steps towards the development of collections and the gathering of knowledge and expertise in preservation and archiving practices. Argos, SMAK and MuHKA are three institutions who are currently most closely associated with the preservation of audiovisual art forms on electronic and digital bearers, with regards to collection, experience, know how and contacts. They purpose to join forces, and establish a structural and functional platform: - with regards to the preservation and archiving, collection building and public disclosure of audiovisual creations on electronic and digital bearers in Flanders. - dedicated to the exchange and compilation of expertise and information, discussions and policy preparation, and possibly establishing collaborations. We perceive that the knowledge and practical possibilities are scattered out for the moment, and that no one is capable of fully developing the required expertise and infrastructure by themselves, permanently incorporating the latest new developments. Our clear intention is to unite what is there for the moment to the highest possible degree and bring it to its full use. Furthermore the missing links with regards to artworks under preservation, as well as the expertise and the equipment, need to be mapped out. To conclude, research needs to be done into the actions each institution should be performing by itself, what can be developed in collaboration, its form, its mission, structure and funding, the shape relations between these institutions should be taking, as well as between other cultural and private organisations wishing to make use of this equipment, knowledge and expertise to preserve works on electronic and digital bearers.
