Exploring the limits of global models for integration and use of historical and scientific information by Silvia Boi — last modified 01-08-2006 11:31
Effective large scale information integration requires an agreement on the common semantics of the data structure elements and other categories employed. Recently, there has been increasing doubt about the possibility of global ontological models. However, knowledge integration based on mere similarity of categories, such as "inexact equivalence" does not allow for precise, global querying advanced reasoning, or interoperability. On the other hand, practical core ontologies such as CIDOC/CRM (ISO/PRF 21127) demonstrate a surprisingly wide validity over multiple domains. This workshop explores the limits of such global models for integrating and making use of historical and scientific information, in order to enhance both, our theoretical understanding of the limits of ontological agreement in a specific application setting, and our practical understanding of how to implement effective large scale knowledge integration services and exploit the power of global models.

DRHA 2007 by Silvia Boi — last modified 06-06-2007 11:48
Over the last decade the annual Digital Resources for the Humanities and Arts (DRHA) conferences have constructed an unusual kind of meeting place for the Humanities: a space in which researchers, curators, and distributors of digital resources could meet and share perspectives on their complementary agendas. Last year, that forum was expanded to include participants from the creative and performing arts, giving the event a new flavour and a new direction. This year, the conference aims to explore further major issues at the interface between traditional humanities scholarship and the creative arts, by focusing on their differing or complementary approaches to the deployment of digital technologies. Can the Arts and the Humanities share expertise? Are they divided by a common tongue? To what extent are they developing common technical solutions to different problem areas? As in previous years, the conference will articulate these questions by showcasing the very best in current practice across the widest spectrum of digital applications in the arts and humanities and by fostering informed but accessible debate amongst professionals.

DaWak 2007 - 9th International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery by Silvia Boi — last modified 21-06-2007 15:06
Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery has been widely accepted as a key technology for enterprises and organisations to improve their abilities in data analysis, decision support, and the automatic extraction of knowledge from data. With the exponential growing amount of information to be included in the decision making process, the data to be considered becomes more and more complex in both structure and semantics. Consequently, the process of retrieval and knowledge discovery from this huge amount of heterogeneous complex data builds the litmus-test for the research in the area. During the past years, the International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK) has become one of the most important international scientific events to bring together researchers, developers and practitioners to discuss latest research issues and experiences in developing and deploying data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems, applications, and solutions. This year’s conference (DaWaK 2007), builds on this tradition of facilitating the cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas, experience and potential research directions. DaWaK 2007 seeks to introduce innovative principles, methods, algorithms and solutions to challenging problems faced in the development of data warehousing, knowledge discovery and data mining applications. Submissions presenting current research work on both theoretical and practical aspects of data warehousing and knowledge discovery are encouraged. Particularly, we strongly welcome submissions dealing with emerging real world applications such as real-time data warehousing, analysis of spatial and spatiotemporal data, OLAP mining, mobile OLAP, mining natural science data (e.g. bioinformatics, geophysics)

DAPS’08, Workshop on Digital Archive Preservation and Sustainability by Silvia Boi — last modified 11-07-2008 11:18
Long term preservation requires the ability to make assertions about governance, sustainability, and trustworthiness. These concerns involve evolution of the community policies under which records are preserved, institutional commitment towards maintaining the preservation environment, and continued verification of the authenticity and integrity of records. As archives grow to the scale of hundreds of petabytes, these assertions become incompatible. This workshop will explore the inherent tensions in minimizing cost while ensuring sustainability, increasing governance controls while collection sizes grow, and improving integrity and authenticity assertions as the number of records increases. It will also explore existing and emerging digital preservation requirements and evolution of architectures.

3rd International Conference on Semantic and Digital Media Technologies (SAMT 2008) by Silvia Boi — last modified 11-07-2008 11:40
The growth, distribution of and access to multimedia material, i.e. recorded images, audio, video or 3D/4D recorded material as well as computer generated 2D, 3D and 4D content, is so huge that these resources now constitute the major share of internet traffic as well as a huge share of data stored on any kind of electronic devices. With their success, the multimedia contents become ever harder to manage, to find and to access by the private users and the public or commercial organizations that created them. The conference series SAMT, the international conference on semantic and digital media technologies, has been installed in 2006 in order to tackle this problem by recurring to the semantics and pragmatics of multimedia generation, management and access.

Adopting Robust Strategies for Digital Preservation by David Lamb — last modified 17-03-2009 10:43
Organisations are investing increasing amounts of time and resources into digitally preserving information and material for future reference. However, many do not fully understand the potential risks associated with the long-term preservation and retrieval or how to proactively address these issues now for future risk mitigation. With the threat of technology obsolescence jeopardising storage and retrieval, organisations need to devise and implement effective strategies to protect digital assets. It is crucial to address concerns and define approaches for managing information, including ‘born-digital’ data and to establishing long-term methods of digital preservation for the future.

E-Resources Technical Update: London by David Lamb — last modified 19-03-2009 10:42
Many of us working directly with e-resources in libraries would like to feel more confident in our understanding of the related technology. Managing e-resources and making them available to end-users is quite different from dealing with print products, but many of us have moved from one to the other, picking up expertise informally. As a result we probably all have gaps in our knowledge and understanding, and the need to gain a proper balanced overview of the technical environment is crucial if we are to do our jobs effectively. The UKSG E-Resources Technical Update course will give you a good understanding of the underlying technicalities involved in e-resource set-up and delivery including e-journals, online databases and e-books, and will help you feel more confident in your day-to-day work.

23rd Annual Preservation Conference Digitizing for Preservation and Access: Past is Prologue by David Lamb — last modified 19-03-2009 11:01
In 2007, the National Archives Preservation Conference focused on the essential components of the digitization process and on common issues that would influence reformatting decisions and approaches. It was geared to benefiting institutions that were contemplating entering, or may have had just entered, the digitization arena. This year we are presenting "Digitizing for Preservation and Access: Past is Prologue." It will focus on institutional approaches, case studies, standards and management techniques for projects and programs that are either underway or already completed. Thus, the discussion has moved from the experimental and theoretical to examining and learning from what has already been done. Our intent is for attendees to leave the conference with an understanding of what digitizing choices are appropriate for their institution, based in part on lessons learned and new ground broken by other institutions, large and small. The 2009 conference coincides with the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the National Archives. "Digitizing for Preservation and Access: Past is Prologue" will also feature an exhibit by vendors who provide products and services related to the conference topic.

The 4th annual International Open Repositories Conference by David Lamb — last modified 19-03-2009 11:06
Repositories increasingly play a pivotal role in the emerging information landscape. Through the format of blending open user group meetings for DSpace, Fedora, and Eprints, followed by general conference sessions that cover cross-cutting and overarching issues, Open Repositories attempts to create an opportunity to explore the challenges faced by user communities and others in today's world. Repositories are being deployed in a variety of environments (education, research, science, cultural heritage) and contexts (national, regional, institutional, project, lab, personal). Regardless of setting, context or scale, repositories are increasingly expected to operate across administrative and disciplinary boundaries and to interact with distributed computational services and social communities. It is the aim of the Open Repositories Conference to bring together individuals and organizations responsible for the conception, development, implementation and management of digital repositories, as well as stakeholders who interact with them, to address theoretical, practical, and strategic issues. The many repository platforms available today are changing the nature of scholarly communication. Institutions such as universities, research laboratories, publishers, libraries, and commercial organizations are creating innovative repository-based systems that address the entire lifecycle of information-from supporting the creation and management of digital content, to enabling use, re-use, and interconnection of information, to ultimately ensuring long-term preservation and archiving.

IASA 2009 40th Annual Conference :Towards a New Kind of Archive? The Digital Philosophy in Audiovisual Archives by David Lamb — last modified 19-03-2009 11:14
When IASA was founded 40 years ago few could imagine the realities with which today’s audiovisual archives are confronted. As we approach the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the digital age for archives, libraries and museums is not an option, but a reality. Huge digitisation projects have been or are being implemented while at the same time the production and distribution of the new content is mostly digital. What is the role of the audiovisual archives in this new technological environment? How distinct are the roles of the various cultural heritage institutions? What methods and techniques will ensure the accountability and continuity of the audiovisual content? How have users’ expectations been changed and what strategies have been employed to meet them? Which is the role of international organisations and of the IASA in this new environment? How can the National Archives of big and smallest countries can cope with this new environment?
Joint BAAC and LCSA Annual Conference : Aggregation and Management of Audiovisual Content in the Digital Space by David Lamb — last modified 19-03-2009 11:16
Large-scale digitization, and aggregation of digital content in the national and international portals representing cultural heritage, is the latest trend in management of cultural resources in Europe and worldwide. This is exemplified by such international initiatives as European Film Gateway, Europeana and other emerging networks. Such portals improve access to heritage resources for diverse audiences, and unlock it for various uses. However, building such repositories of shared resources requires collaboration and organizational decisions. The development of virtual memory institutions for audiovisual collections requires the establishment of effective content management solutions. High on the agenda of audiovisual archives are a wide spectrum of issues. They range from analogue-to-digital conversion, development and maintenance of digital archives, long-term preservation of digitized and born-digital material, as well as standardization and interoperability of digital information systems. In accordance with the latest emerging issues in the management and dissemination of audiovisual heritage, the conference, "Aggregation and Management of Audiovisual Content in the Digital Space", aims to promote a higher visibility for the Baltic heritage in a digital environment. Nationally and internationally, this can be achieved by sharing best practices and encouraging collaborative networks for stakeholders.

Digital Preservation – The Planets Way by David Lamb — last modified 04-06-2009 14:22
As more information is created online it has become increasingly important - for regulatory, governance, business continuity, or simply to keep hold of valuable or valued information - to take action to ensure that this information will still be available in ten and more years' time. Planets (Preservation and Long-term Access through NETworked Services) will host the first in a series of three-day training events in Europe at The Royal Library, Copenhagen on 22-24 June 2009. Digital Preservation – The Planets Way will examine the need to preserve digital content, the action that needs to be taken and the Planets approach to addressing these issues. Day 1 will consider the case for preserving digital objects, the technical issues involved, the Planets framework, tools and services. On days 2 and 3 delegates will gain hands-on experience of working with Planets and a scenario (sample collection) to develop a preservation plan and preserve digital objects. The event will include plenty of opportunity for discussion, sharing ideas and best practice and to ask questions and an example of how the Royal Library of the Netherlands is preserving digital content. Planets is a joint European project co-funded by the European Commission as part of Framework Programme 6 and delivered by a Consortium of 16 National Libraries, Archives, research and technology institutions. Planets has already released a number of preservation tools that can be used freely and/or downloaded, and by mid 2010 will make available a Preservation Framework and suite of digital preservation tools and services.

World Library and Information Congress: 75th IFLA General Conference and Assembly by David Lamb — last modified 30-06-2009 10:15
Technological advances in the past several years have enabled libraries to create new services that were not possible before, such as personalized OPAC interfaces, semantic searches through different kind of multimedia resources, different kind of visualizations, downloading media that could be used for research purposes etc. So we have an increasing range of services which fit very closely to the specific needs of users. In parallel the development of Web 2.0 technologies has had an important impact on library services - dubbed the "library 2.0" model. This new library 2.0 requires a user-centred shift and encourages constant and purposeful change in which the users take an active part in the creation of the physical and the virtual services they want. Social networks, virtual access, tagging, blogging and wikis are just part of this new dimension and are open to librarians as well as to old and new users’ participation. The limits between the creation and the usage have disappeared and the library becomes a meeting point where people share their interest and problems with each other with a high potential for interoperability & exchange and the transition from classic isolated fields in the information infrastructure to dedicated communities and their specific workspaces. Some of these ideas are much older and have their origin in the basic ideas of the semantic web. In a sense we have seen a revival of these ideas: earlier statements like “too much complex” change to approaches which try to characterise data in the specific syntax of the semantic web are superseded by the opening of data for web applications. In this sense the new web technologies influence the potential access to information, too.

8th European Conference on Digital Archiving, Geneva 2010 by David Lamb — last modified 07-07-2009 09:09
The next edition of the European Conference on Archiving has been transformed into the “8th European Conference on Digital Archiving”. Following the invitation of its Scientific Committee, a group of young archivists have already looked into the development of an attractive programme for this important meeting of the archival community which will take place in Geneva in 2010. The 8th European Archives Conference will take place in Geneva from 28 - 30 April, 2010. Designed to define the current and future challenges of the profession, the conference is being organised by the European Regional Branch (EURBICA) and the Section on Professional Associations (SPA) of the International Council on Archives (ICA) as well as by the Swiss Federal Archives. The International Scientific Committee, responsible for the programme of the conference, decided to choose digital archiving as the general theme for this 8th edition. They wished to innovate by focusing on the function of archives – the archiving – and no longer on the institution. The conference programme will therefore be structured around the challenges and opportunities represented by digital archiving today.

Digital Preservation – The Planets Way by David Lamb — last modified 04-09-2009 08:26
It is widely recognised that as more information is created or stored digitally there is a need to take action to preserve digital collections in the same way as there is a need to preserve physical collections of books, journals, images, film, audio and manuscripts. The rapid rate at which technology is evolving and digital material is degraded presents particular challenges about what to preserve, which features to preserve, for how long, for what usage and how to undertake preservation activities. Planets (Preservation and Long-term Access through NETworked Services) will host the second in a series of five three-day training events in Europe at the Arena di Serdica hotel, Sofia, Bulgaria, on 16-18 September 2009. ‘Digital Preservation – The Planets Way’ will consider the need to preserve digital content, the action that needs to be taken and introduce the Planets approach to addressing these issues.
PV 2009, Ensuring Long-Term Preservation and Adding Value to Scientific and Technical Data by David Lamb — last modified 30-09-2009 10:50
After four very successful events, PV 2002 at CNES in Toulouse, France, PV 2004 at ESA/ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, PV 2005 at DCC in Edinburgh, UK and PV 2007 at DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, the conference series continues to address prospects in the domain of scientific and technical data preservation together with value adding to these data. The amount of digital data increases, the price for storage capacity decreases, the technology is still rapidly evolving offering new ways of storing, publishing and building added value services on top of data. Temptation is high to believe that dealing with massive amount of data is easy, just because data storage gets every day cheaper and the technology more stable. But data management, data description and data curation remain the challenges for building modern archives while keeping in mind their long-term preservation.
