The Newham Digital Archive was deposited with the archaeology wing of the Arts and Humanities Data Service, when the Newham Archaeological Service was closed down with very little notice. Staff had to then perform 'digital archaeology', sorting through the archive and trying to make sense of its constituent parts. The difficulties in bringin the Newham Archive back to life demonstrate that forgoing efficient documentation during data creation endangers the existence of that very data

Arts and Humanities Data Service Preservation Handbooks

The AHDS series of Preservation Handbooks identify significant properties of the data types provide instruction for AHDS staff on how best to preserve digital objects, in accordance with "a migration based preservation approach, incorporating migration to standard formats during ingest." While created with this internal purpose in mind, they may well be of interest to other users and are made available to download.
